Every year in Massachusetts, we throw away over one billion beverage containers, enough to fill Fenway Park past the bleachers. These bottles get buried in landfills or burned in incinerators, which is polluting, wasteful, and expensive.

Massachusetts actually has one of the best recycling programs in the country--the Bottle Bill, the five-cent deposit on beer and soda bottles. This fall, we're working to update the Bottle Bill to include water, juice, and sports drinks. This bill has been held up in the legislature for the past decade, and we can't wait any longer. We're taking this issue to the people and launching a campaign to collect 100,000 citizen signatures to qualify the Bottle Bill for the 2014 ballot.

This will be the largest student-run field operation in the state this year. Here at Westfield State, we'll be collecting 2,000 citizen signatures on campus and in the wider community. I'm really excited to start working with faculty and staff, local elected officials, and MASSPIRG student chapters across the state!

See you on campus,
