A Bigger Better Bottle Bill

Update the Bottle Bill

By UMass Dartmouth

Every year we throw away 1 billion beverage containers, enough to fill Fenway Park past the bleachers. These containers are buried in landfills or burned in incinerators, which is wasteful, polluting, and expensive.

We have one of the most effective recycling programs in the country, the Bottle Bill--the 5 cent deposit on beer and soda bottles. As of now, it does not include water, juice and sports drinks, so we are working to pass a Bigger Better Bottle Bill (BBBB) that will include these containers. Unfortunately, the big business and liquor lobbyists have been blocking this pro-recycling bill in the legislature for the past decade. We cannot wait any longer--so we are taking this issue to the people.

This fall we are collecting 100,000 citizen signatures to qualify for the 2014 ballot. This will be the biggest student-run field operation in the state this year. It was students who helped pass the bottle bill back in the 80s and we can do this again. So join the campaign and help us make history!
